A LONDINIUM I (2012-2016 model) customer writes from the USA...

hi rick

thank you for taking the time to write

1. insulation - the boiler is sitting within a box of air, which is in itself a good insulator. the power consumption of the machine is not significant. if we put insulation on and someone has a need to access the boiler the very first thing that needs to happen is for the insulation to be removed, and then it needs to be refitted afterwards. with time it becomes pretty unpleasant underneath the insulation

2. Place the panels in the sink with hot water, then the wrap will peel off quite easily. Use WD40 or a citrus solvent to remove the vapourised protective film in the areas of laser engraving

3. The boiler pressure will, and should, cycle in the manner that you are observing. A pressure switch must have a range between the pressure at which it switches off and the pressure at which it switches on again. In the case of the L1 the pressure switch opens (stops heating) when the boiler pressure reaches 1.3 bar and closes again (starts heating) when the boiler pressure falls to about 1.1 or 1.0. It is important to appreciate that the impact on the temperature of the group of this pressure range is less than 0.1C! So there is no need for you to take any correct action - the pressure switch will turn the element on itself when the pressure falls sufficiently

4. 21g baskets aren’t well suited to the L1, but an 18g basket is useful

5. Yes, your machine is fitted with the high performance piston seals

merry xmas!

Dear Reiss,

I received my new Londinium 1 about a week ago. It arrived much faster than I ever expected and in perfect condition. I quickly removed the pump and hooked the machine up to my filtered water line. This was a very easy process. After warming up, I pulled my first shot which was quite good. I have started the experimental phase to further improve the quality of the shot but right out of the box it was quite good!

The fit and finish of the machine is excellent. I have had numerous positive comments from friends. In fact, one neighbor may be placing an order in the not too distant future.

Below are some questions and comments:

I greatly appreciate the quietness of the plumbed machine. The only real noise comes from the thermostat turning on and off every few minutes. Perhaps it would be possible to make this less noticeable in the future, maybe a different design or sound insulation.

Is there an operational reason the boiler is not insulated? Just curious.

Is there an easy way to remove the remaining protective wrap on the drip tray on the Londinium raised letters?

When the machine is turned on it will reach 1.3 bar fairly quickly. After a while, this will drop to 1.0-1.1. A quick flush with the steam or hot water valve usually brings it right back to 1.3. Is this the proper way to handle it?

Using about 15.5 - 16 grams of coffee in the supplied basket seems to work quite well. What has been the experience using a 21 gram basket? Is it worth even experimenting with this?

I read about gasket issues after a few months of use. Did my machine come with the high performance gaskets?

The steam output is amazing! It only took me one pitcher of milk to control it. Beautiful microfoam. My preference would be a longer arm but perhaps that is just what I am used to.

Reiss, you have made a fantastic machine which not only produces an excellent shot of espresso but is also fun to use. Thank you for all of the attention to detail and obvious love you put into the design and manufacturing of the Londinium 1.

Wishing you a happy holiday season.

Kind regards,

Rick
