Bespoke Coffee Roasters

100% pure robusta. single estate. organic. Java

£5.00 - £20.00

This coffee conveys perfectly the ethos of Londinium. Every roaster we know would tell you that a 100% robusta would be unfit to drink. In almost all cases we would agree, as evidenced by all our other roasts that are 100% arabica. This roast is an enigma and we are proud to be the first to offer something so mad, so far beyond the limits of conventional roasting wisdom. Countless hours of experimentation precede our presentation of this roast.

It is unusual in that it gives a smooth hazelnut espresso, yet rather than becoming lost in a cappuccino the nutty flavours seem to open out even more. It makes a wonderful cappuccino as it fuses so perfectly with the milk, yet the very high caffeine content gives it a kick like a mule.

Semeru Estate is located in Jember District in the province of East Java. The area is well-known as a producer of tobacco, cocoa and coffee. Semeru Estate itself is located at an elevation of 400-500 metres. It takes its name from Mount Semeru, the highest summit on the island of Java at 3,676 metres and an active volcano which lies at the south end of the Tengger Volcanic Complex in the south west of the island.

A word of warning; the caffeine levels in robusta are approximately twice that of arabica varieties so don't go mad and try to have four double shots or similar in quick succession as you are likely to experience the rather unpleasant effects over being over-caffeinated. It is completely different to any other coffee we currently offer. Enjoyed responsibly it is a fantastic coffee.

It has not been necessary to roast the daylights out of it in order to smother undesirable tastes within the bean as is almost always the case with robusta. This coffee is completely different from any other we have experienced in that it is so dense; it is like roasting rock. It absorbs so much energy and as a result the roast progresses very slowly. Still, this painful process pays dividends in the cup.
